Arthritis is an inflammation of a joint or joints.  There are types of arthritis with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) being the more difficult because it is a systemic problem and left unchecked, can be the most deforming and painful.  R.A. is considered an auto-immune disease- where for unknown reasons the body attacks itself.  Rheumatologists have much at their disposal to help patients with this disease and perhaps one day stem cells may offer hope of a cure for this debilitating problem.

Arthritis can be caused by unusual wear on a joint, as is often the case in sports.  Trauma can also create arthritis.  Poor nutrition or famine can create arthritis like symptoms as well as hormonal changes- particularly in women as they age can create bone loss.

Infection of bone can cause osteonecrosis and loss of blood supply to bone can also destroy joints.

Toxins and rarely radiation can cause radiation necrosis of bone.  The only known treatment for radiation necrosis is Hyperbaric Oxygen.

Hyperbaric Oxygen, oxygen at high pressure in a chamber also will lower the RA number in Rheumatoid Arthritis, according to William Maxfield, MD.
